【About Sakurajima volcano】
Sakurajima, the symbol of Kagoshima, is a composite active volcano that combines two volcanoes, Kitadake and Minamidake, and is a rare volcano in the world that is still emitting smoke and raining ash. It is 1,117 meters high, 52 km in circumference, and 80 km2 in area, and was connected to the Osumi Peninsula by an eruption in 1914. It was designated as a scenic spot by the prefecture in 1954. At the Sakurajima Visitor Center near Sakurajima Port, visitors can learn all about Sakurajima, including the historic eruption and its topographical changes. On the 15-minute boat ride on the Sakurajima Ferry from Kagoshima Port, you can look forward to the majestic sight of Sakurajima as it gradually approaches, while enjoying the famous udon noodle soup. Driving around the island, of course, or taking the Sakurajima Island View, a Sakurajima excursion bus, is recommended to visit the main tourist spots on the island. The tour route includes the Yunodaira Observatory, the highest point accessible to the public, and the Akamizu Observatory Plaza and Portrait of a Shout, which were built on the site of Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi’s all-night concert. Roadside Station “Sakurajima” Hi-no-shima Megumi Kan offers gourmet foods and souvenirs using local products such as Sakurajima komikan and Sakurajima radish, as well as lodging facilities such as Rainbow Sakurajima, where visitors can enjoy natural hot spring baths.
